BYD to Begin EV Production in Brazil by 2025, Creating 20,000 Jobs by 2026
BYD has announced plans to produce electric vehicles in Brazil. The company plans to produce its first electric vehicle in Brazil by March 2025. Through this project, the company aims to provide 10,000 direct jobs by the end of 2025 and 20,000 direct jobs by the end of 2026. This information was shared during the meeting between Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and BYD America CEO Stella Li.
BYD Expansion in Brazil
President Lula welcomed Stella Li and the BYD team at the Planalto Palace. The meeting was also attended by key Brazilian ministers and the governor of the state of Bahia. The meeting discussed BYD’s production plans in Brazil. Stella Li said that this plant will be the largest and most modern electric vehicle production plant outside China.
Production and Employment
BYD announced that 10,000 direct jobs will be created between January and August 2025. 2,000 new jobs will be created in January, 3,000 in May and 5,000 in August. This number is expected to reach 20,000 by the end of 2026. The production capacity of the plant will be 1,50,000 vehicles by the end of 2025, which will increase to 3,00,000 vehicles by the end of 2026. The main purpose of production is to supply the Brazilian and South American markets.
Innovative Hybrid Flex System at Bahia Plant
Stella Li informed that BYD is renovating its Camaรงari plant in the state of Bahia. The company has fulfilled its commitment to start production of the Hybrid Flex System there. This system operates with electricity, gasoline, and ethanol. A team of 110 Chinese and Brazilian engineers successfully completed this project, reinforcing BYD’s commitment to fostering local innovation and development. Along with this, BYD plans to establish a large technical research center in the state of Bahia.
BYD’s Global EV Sales Performance
BYD sold 506,804 new energy vehicles globally in November 2024, marking a 67.86% year-on-year growth. Out of these, 30,977 units were sold in international markets, including 28,141 vehicles exported.
President Lula’s support
President Lula welcomed BYD’s plans and called it a major achievement for Brazil’s automotive industry and employment opportunities. The project is an important step towards promoting green energy and technological development in Brazil.
