Deepak Punia beats Muhammad Inam of Pakistan in wrestling final, wins gold in Commonwealth Games

NEW DELHI : Deepak Punia of India has won gold medal in 2022 Commonwealth Games. He defeated Pakistan’s Muhammad Inam 3-0 in the final of the men’s 86kg freestyle on Saturday. This is Punia’s first medal in the Commonwealth Games. His win has taken India’s total medal tally to 24.
Additionally, this is India’s 9th gold medal in the ongoing edition of the Games. Earlier, Bajrang Punia (men’s 65kg) and Sakshi Malik (women’s 62kg) also won gold, while Anshu Malik (women’s 57kg) bagged silver.

In the 86kg freestyle category, defending champion Muhammad Inam Punia of Pakistan was far from his best during the final bout. Punia successfully took her opponent to a 2-0 lead. Both the wrestlers were largely defensive in the bout but Inam made a final attempt to make a comeback despite apparently gasping for breath, only to be thwarted by Punia easily and got over him.
Earlier, Punia started his campaign in the games with a fairly straight win by technical superiority against New Zealand’s Matthew Oxenham in the pre-quarterfinal game, and was followed by a similar one against Sierra Leone’s Sheku Kasegbama in the quarterfinals. And won. However, the 23-year-old Indian faced tough competition against Alexander Moore of Canada for the last spot.
It was Punia’s slow start and Moore’s defensive approach later cost a point, being the only difference between the two wrestlers in the first round. Moore’s footwork did not allow Punia to attack and the Indian wrestler decided to play the waiting game after taking the lead. In the second round, however, Punia leapt into the attack and forced Moore out of the ring.

Punia made headlines in 2019 when she won India’s only silver medal at the 2019 World Championships in Nur-Sultan. The 2019 World Junior Champion in the 86kg category, Punia successfully followed her age-group dominance and won two Asian Championships silver (Almaty 2021, Ulaanbaatar 2022), as well as two bronze medals (Xi’an 2019, Delhi 2020). ,
