A Petromax placed on a boat. Fisherman standing on a boat in the middle of the river under the bridge looking for prey. The camera goes under the water with the stone. The stone hits the foothills and the camera pans to the right, away from the stone. A hand is visible. Maybe even nail polish. The name of the film appears on the screen, ‘Gaslight’. When there was no electricity in the villages and more light was needed for family and social functions, gas lights were hired. This gaslight consists of a filter-like cloth bag tied with a string around a jet-shaped earthenware device that ignites pressurized kerosene to produce a bright white light. This is the indigenous meaning of ‘gaslight’. In English, ‘gaslight’ means to psychologically harass someone so much that he begins to trust his own logic or intelligence. The film ‘Gaslight’ is a story walking on this fine line.
Set in an old fortified building near Morbi, Gujarat, the film ‘Gaslight’ is about the alleged princess of this princely state who returns here after 15 years. In the accident, the lower part of his waist has been disabled. Rukmini welcomes the princess who is back in a wheelchair. People call Rukmini the little queen. In an old video, when Rukmini kisses this princess, Rani looks at her with disgust. The princess also calls her by name. She has come here with a letter from a donor. But Dani is not here. People say he has gone out. In the dark of night, the princess sees her benefactor. The doctor says it is his delusion. When she wants to find out about the little queen, the guardian of the princely state keeps himself away from his personal life.
The film ‘Gaslight’ shows its cards of being a psycho suspense thriller film within the first 30 minutes. Only the trump card is left in the last 15 minutes. Ragul Dharmauman has probably done the cinematography of the film according to the darkness of the theatre. Even watching it on a smart TV during the day is a challenge in itself. The film’s editor, Chandan Arora, has allowed the film to run at its own pace. Yes, he has no match in connecting different scenes. He tries his best to float the mystery of the story through its perspective. Anirban Sengupta, who designed the sound for the film, has also been praised. He has masterfully arranged the silence and let the music enter the film like a breath, where it is needed. But, the film has lost its story.
People may not even remember director Pawan Kriplani’s previous film ‘Bhoot Police’. The movie ‘Gaslight’ will hardly be remembered after a year or two. It is the sacrifice of Disney Plus Hotstar that these two films could be deposited in their account from the TIPS account. Made by the duo of Ramesh Torani and Akshay Puri, these two films have the Pataudi family in common. The hero of the film ‘Bhoot Police’ was Saif Ali Khan, here is Sara Ali Khan in the film ‘Gaslight’. Looks like both the films are made in a package deal. Despite bringing together some of the best technicians in Hindi cinema, Pawan Kriplani has returned to where he failed in the previous film namely the story and its screenplay. He starts the movie ‘Gaslight’ with a lot of punishment but as the movie progresses, his temper starts to cool. Nothing comes to the hands of the audience and when the whole affair unfolds in the climax of the film, everything happens quickly as if a task is being done.
The film ‘Gaslight’ is the third film of its heroine Sara Ali Khan after ‘Coolie No 1’ and ‘Antarangi Re’ which did not make it to the theatres. Direct OTT of movies. The audience is also understanding this reason to come on. The biggest reason for the film ‘Gaslight’ not reaching the theaters is its heroine Sara Ali Khan. Being from a filmy family, she has been getting a steady stream of films, but her growth as an actress has been stuck around the time of her first film ‘Kedarnath’. Sitting on a wheelchair for a mysterious film, he refrained from showing his physical expressions, but his facial expressions also did not change according to the scenes. On the other hand, Vikrant Massey is falling into a certain pattern with his characters. He is neither trying to get out of it nor the producers, directors are capable of making him do anything else.
Chitrangada’s brilliance is the attraction
Chitrangada Singh is the only attraction of the movie ‘Gaslight’, with the help of which the movie can be watched till the end. Chitrangada Singh, who has attracted both praise and work on screen with the sweetness of her appearance, has given a brilliant performance in the role of Rukmini. The way Chitrangada’s acting was improved by director Sudhir Mishra, he needs some more directors. Negative characters suit him very well. Due to the presence of talented actors like Akshay Oberoi, Rahul Dev and Shishir Sharma in the film, initially it seems that there will be fun, but the characters of these actors are not properly decorated in the screenplay. Apart from Chitrangada’s acting, one good thing about the movie ‘Gaslight’ is that despite being a music company’s film, there are no powerful songs like ‘An Action Hero’.
