The film ‘Bhola’ released last week and the film ‘Gumrah’ (2023) released this Friday are two new lessons of Hindi cinema. These lessons are also for the audience of Hindi films. Lessons are also there for the film critics who enriched the film ‘Bhola’ with their star rating and the film still managed to reach Rs 60 crore in its first week (eight days) of release. The lesson of ‘Bhola’ is that it is very important to match the characters with the surroundings before remaking the film. And, the lesson of the film ‘Gumrah’ (2023) is that not every ‘Arjun Reddy’ can be a ‘Kabir Singh’ in its remake. Especially when the lead hero of the remake is characterized only by looking like his hero.

Time to get out of the remake

Gumrah (2023), a remake of the Tamil film Thadam released just four years ago, is another example of Hindi cinema going astray. Aditya Roy Kapur is playing a double role in the remake of Arun Vijay’s best acting film ‘Thadam’. The criminal relationship between the two characters is interesting but in the Hindi remake both the characters are very filmy on the lines of Jay Khanna’s dialogues in ‘Jubilee’. The first lesson of working in films is that you have to create a world that is fictional but feels real. The entire magic of the film is based on this one charisma. Nowadays, audiences can’t tolerate even the slightest bit of fakeness, from acting to atmosphere.

Shivani, The name is not enough

The police suspect both Aditya Roy Kapur’s characters in the film ‘Gumrah’ (2023). The theory of the same police officer is working behind both. Mrinal Thakur is playing the role of Shivani in Rani Mukherjee’s film ‘Mardani’ here. People who have seen Mrinal Thakur in the movie ‘Sita Ram’, they will be surprised to see his character. On-screen actresses who play cops have also long been in need of a crash course. Do you remember, in a scene from the movie ‘Saaho’, when Shraddha Kapoor jumps and lands on the ground, instead of the criminal, her focus is on decorating her hair! Similarly, there was no need for Mrunal Thakur to look so ‘tinch’ here.

The same acting of Aditya Kapoor

Since the film is a suspense thriller, there is a danger of the suspense unfolding as the story unfolds. And, the acting of the film’s cast is not much to write home about. Aditya Roy Kapur’s brothers are big producers, so every film of his is well received in the company. Whatever the characters do, the artwork remains the same in all of them. Khaki suits Ronit Roy, but when the characters in the story are like Crime Patrol, what can Ronit Roy do? Vedika Pinto is certainly charming and Deepak Kalra soars as the partner in crime.

Vardhan is lacking in the debut film

If you have seen the movie ‘Thadam’, then the movie ‘Gumrah’ (2023) stands nowhere in front of it and one person who is fully responsible for this is the director of the movie Vardhan Ketkar. The film could have been a good entertainer if Vardhan, who devoted all his energy to the action sequences, had worked a little better on the social and psychological aspects of the film. Now it has become a very average masala movie. No one pays much attention to where the standard of music has fallen in T-series movies. His music videos are getting views. The cost of films is coming from OTT rights. Business is going well. No one has any particular interest in cinema.
