HDMI 2.2 Launched: Faster Speeds, Double Bandwidth, and Ultra96 Cable for Next-Gen Displays
The HDMI Forum has launched the HDMI 2.2 interface specification after 8 years. This new technology provides twice the bandwidth, i.e. 96 Gbps, as compared to HDMI 2.1. This new specification will ensure better audio and video quality on TV, film, gaming, and other digital platforms.
Features of HDMI 2.2
HDMI 2.2 uses the next generation HDMI Fixed Rate Link (FRL) technology, which supports higher resolution and faster refresh rate. This new bandwidth will provide a better experience in modern applications such as AR, VR, MR, spatial reality and light field display. This technology is also ideal for business uses such as large digital signage, medical imaging and machine vision.
In addition, HDMI 2.2 includes Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), which will improve synchronization between audio and video. This is especially useful for multi-hop systems with soundbars and audio-video receivers.
New Ultra96 Cables
A new cable called Ultra96 has been introduced for HDMI 2.2, which supports 96 Gbps bandwidth. The good thing is that this cable will remain backward-compatible with the previous HDMI specification. This means that the new cable will also work with older devices and TVs. The Ultra96 cable is part of the HDMI Cable Certification Program, in which each model length will be tested and certified.
Comparison of HDMI and DisplayPort
With the launch of HDMI 2.2, its bandwidth has now surpassed the 80 Gbps of DisplayPort 2.1a. HDMI 2.1, which launched in 2017, was limited to 48 Gbps bandwidth. However, HDMI is used in more devices and consumer areas than DisplayPort.
When will it be available?
The HDMI 2.2 specification is expected to be adopted in the first half of 2025. However, it may take time for its commercial use and new devices based on it to appear. Ultra96 cables may come to market relatively soon, but new devices will be needed to take full advantage of HDMI 2.2.
Message to Consumers
HDMI 2.2 will be used mainly by consumers who use cutting-edge technologies, such as VR headsets and large digital signage. Ordinary TV users do not need this new technology at the moment.
With the launch of HDMI 2.2, a big step has been taken in the world of technology. This new technology will help make future displays and devices more advanced.
