AHMEDABAD: Dismissing speculation that he might retire from the IPL after leading Chennai Super Kings to their fifth title, Mahendra Singh Dhoni said he will play again next season to reward the fans’ love.
From the beginning of this season, there were speculations that this would be Dhoni’s last season. The way the fans showered him with love at every pitch, the prospect seemed even more certain.
After the five-wicket win over Gujarat Titans in the final, when Dhoni was asked if this was his last season, he said, ‘Given the circumstances, this is the best time for me to retire.’ It’s very easy for me to say I’m leaving now but it’s hard to work hard for the next nine months and come back and play another season.
He said, “The body has to cooperate. The way the Chennai fans have loved me, it will be my gift to them to play another season. For the love and passion they have shown, I should also do something.” Dhoni said, “This is the last phase of my career. It started from here and the whole stadium was chanting my name. Same happened in Chennai but I will come back and play as much as possible.
