Cannes 2023 was high on fashion. From Anushka’s monochrome magic to Aishwarya’s goddess avatar, the Bollywood divas made all the right noises. Apart from making a fashion statement with their glamorous outfits, celebrities have also been known to express their protest and send strong messages about events around the world at Cannes. This year too, some celebrities took the fashion game quite seriously and were seen calling for a large number of executions in Iran.

An Iranian model, Mahlagha Jaberi, walked the Cannes red carpet in a black gown that looked like a noose around her neck. Her dress also had a bold message that read, “Stop the hanging.” She shared a video and pictures of her outfit on Instagram explaining her message against wrongful executions in Iran.

“We wanted to make a fashion statement to capture the glamor of Cannes, but more importantly to draw media attention to the wrongful execution of Iranians. Unfortunately, political statements are not allowed at the film festival and security prevented me from showing. Behind my dress, but the meaning of “nose” was well understood,” she wrote.

Her dress was designed by Jila Sabre. Dedicating her outfit to the people of Iran, Jaberi also thanked her designer, videographer, and the entire team who were a part of bringing the version to life.

It is worth noting that the model was intended to draw attention to the increase in wrongful executions of people in Iran, which reportedly increased after recent protests against the backdrop of the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.

Celebrities Protesting Cannes 2023

Mahlagha Jaberi is not the first model to protest the festival. A few days ago, another model was spotted wearing the colors of the Ukrainian flag as she walked the Cannes red carpet in light of the ongoing Ukraine vs. Russia war. Not only this, he also bled fake blood while standing on the steps of the Palais des Festivals before being removed by security personnel.

A day later, a Ukrainian model, Alina Bykova, was seen wearing a dress in the colors of the Ukrainian flag as she made a strong statement against Russian President Vladimir Putin.
