Kochi: After the historic decision to give leave to its female students during menstruation, the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has now given engineering students the freedom to wear anything between pants, shirts or churidars.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University has accepted the long-standing demand of the students in this regard in a recent order. Till now, under CUSAT, boys in the School of Engineering had to wear shirts and pants and female students. wear churidar
Now, as per the new order, both boys and girls will have the option of wearing shirt-pant or churidar. The principal of the School of Engineering has clarified in a letter to the university’s joint registrar, Shobha S, that the new instructions will come into effect from June 1, 2023.
The letter states that the Vice-Chancellor has directed the School of Engineering to adopt a gender neutral uniform without changing the color of the existing uniform.
The university has taken this decision on the recent representation of Namitha George, President of Students Union of SFI (Students Federation of India) of CUSAT.
More than 2,000 regular students studying various courses in the College of Engineering are expected to benefit from the new order, Namitha said. It may be recalled that earlier this year CUSAT had granted “menstrual leave” to women students. . Under this, an additional discount of two percent in attendance was given to female students in every semester.
