Bollywood has once again made its way to the Oscars. Kiran Rao’s film Laapataa Ladies has won everyone’s heart and now this film has become India’s official entry for Oscars 2025. This is indeed big and happy news for the creators and the actors who put their blood, sweat and tears into the movie. This film is a comedy-drama that tells the story of two new brides who get swapped in a train while going to their husband’s house.ย 

Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Srivastava and Nitanshi Goel have given wonderful performances in the film. This film was released on 1 March 2024 and since then it has received positive reviews from both audiences and critics.

This film has been selected after beating 29 Indian films, which include big names like Animal, Aattam, and All We Imagine As Light.

India has an old relationship with Oscars. Bhanu Athaiya was the first Indian to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design for the film Gandhi in 1983. Satyajit Ray received an Honorary Oscar in 1992. In 2009, Slumdog Millionaire gave A.R. Rahman and Resul Pookutty a chance to win Oscars. Recent winners include RRR’s song “Naatu Naatu” and The Elephant Whisperers documentary short film.

Kiran Rao, who is the director and producer of this film, expressed her happiness, saying, “I am very honoured and delighted that our film Laapataa Ladies has been selected as India’s official entry.
