Mahindra and Skoda-Volkswagen Joint Venture: A Game Changer for Both Companies?
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and Skoda Auto Volkswagen India are at the final stages of creating a 50:50 joint venture, one that is to transform the future for both companies. Though still under negotiation, this corporation is mainly inclined to develop electric vehicles and SUVs, for the Indian as well as international markets. So, here’s how this joint venture might turn out to shape the future for both automakers.
Focus on Electric Vehicles
The tie-up addresses the rapidly growing demand for electric vehicles, a segment both the Mahindra and Volkswagen group are keen to have considerable space. For Mahindra, this is an ideal chance to expand its EV offerings as of now, a hitherto very narrow portfolio with just the XUV400. With the INGLO platform, Mahindra will launch multiple electric offerings in the coming years itself. In partnering with Skoda-Volkswagen, the company can share technological competence and reduce costs while making the development of those vehicles take place much faster.
While this is indeed a high-potential market for Skoda-Volkswagen, the venture hasn’t really made much of an inroads into this quickly evolving market. As the government in India brings on tighter carbon-emission regulations while also espousing electric mobility, Mahindra gives VW a chance to use low-cost production by using this venture but maintaining the premium character of its brand.
Benefits for Both Companies
Mahindra would gain much more in terms of access to leading-edge European technology, particularly Volkswagen’s MEB platform, which will play a significant role in Mahindra’s future electric designs. The manufacturing capacity of Skoda-Volkswagen is also at 300,000 units annually, which can push forward Mahindra’s production so far into expanding its market reach.
On the other hand, the low-cost platforms of Mahindra will be availed of by Skoda-Volkswagen to bring the cost of its production down so that the vehicles can be priced competitively in India. Whereas all other market destinations have had relative success for companies, the strategy taken by the companies in India has been less successful, and this joint venture seems to be the start of a much wider footprint creation.
Future Prospects
It comes at a most pivotal juncture when both companies are contesting for the final stake in the global electric vehicle market. If this succeeds, it may be catapulted to give Mahindra a much-needed boost in its production capacity; while Skoda-Volkswagen would get a one-up position in the Indian market. Thereby, each party might benefit from reduced cost burdens by getting insight into one another’s real production capabilities. Further details are to be announced by the end of 2024, as the partnership remains to be negotiated.
The partnership will see a significant shift in the automotive market, mainly in India, wherein both companies are trying to win a larger share of the competitive electric vehicle space.
