NEW DELHI : Sakshi Malik has won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 by defeating Ana Godinez Gonzales of Canada in the women’s 62kg freestyle wrestling final. Sakshi Malik’s first gold medal in Commonwealth Games 2022.
Sakshi won the gold medal by defeating Ana Godinez Gonzales of Canada in the women’s 62kg freestyle wrestling final. Sakshi, whose campaign began with a quarterfinal bout on the opening day of wrestling in the Games, outclassed all her opponents to ensure the top.

Rio Olympics bronze medalist Sakshi had won a bronze medal at the Gold Coast Games four years ago. But this time around, she improved and won her first gold, giving India their 22nd overall medal tally and finishing third on the day behind Anshu Malik’s silver and Bajrang Punia’s gold in wrestling.

Sakshi’s first opponent was England’s Kesley Barnes in the quarterfinals, whom she defeated 10–0 on technical superiority. He continued his relentless effort to outperform Berthe Emilion Etienne Ngole in the semifinals. In the final, she was up against Gonzales of Canada, where Sakshi made a stunning comeback to win via pinfall.
Down 2-3 at the end of the first round, Sakshi was looking at silver chances. Gonzalez went for a leg attack, which Sakshi couldn’t defend twice. This allowed Canada to take four points. But in a remarkable comeback, Sakshi was quick to do a takedown and with the aid of a reversal, pulled off a pinfall for the win. This victory brought back memories of her victory at Rio 2016
Sakshi had earlier won a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and a bronze medal at the 2015 Asian Wrestling Championships in Doha. Malik’s first success as a professional wrestler in the international arena came in 2010 at the Junior World Championships, where he won a bronze medal in the 58 kg freestyle event.

Earlier this year, Sakshi ended her five-year wait for an international gold in the ranking series in Almaty this June. Last month, Sakshi won a bronze medal in the Tunis Ranking Series, indicating that she has regained her lead ahead of the Commonwealth Games. And on Friday at Coventry Arena, he proved that notion correct.
