Lausanne Condemning the detention of prominent Indian wrestlers during a protest march on May 28, world wrestling’s governing body United World Wrestling (WWW) on Tuesday warned that if the pending elections were not held, the Indian The Wrestling Federation (WFI) may suspend it.
In a strongly worded statement, the UWW said it was viewing with ‘deep concern’ the situation related to the wrestlers’ protest over abuse of power and sexual harassment by WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The events of the past few days are even more alarming. that the wrestlers have been arrested and temporarily detained by the police for starting a protest march.
The UWW strongly condemns the ill-treatment and arrest of wrestlers. He expresses disappointment over the lack of investigation results so far. The UWW urges the relevant authorities to conduct a full and impartial investigation into the allegations. The governing body said it wanted to “reaffirm our support for an inquiry into the status and safety of the wrestlers and a fair and just resolution of their concerns”. Will get to confirm.
It is worth mentioning that due to this controversy, UWW shifted the Asian Championship from Delhi to Astana at the beginning of this year. The governing body said that it has asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the WFI from the ad-hoc committee of the Wrestling Federation. Will ask for information about the elections.
Failure to do so could result in the UWW suspending the federation, forcing athletes to compete (in international competitions) under a neutral flag.
