Apple to End iCloud Backup Support for iOS 8

Apple recently announcedย that iCloud backup support forย iOS 8 and older devices will be completely discontinued after May 17, 2025. This means that iPhone or iPad users running on these older iOS versions cannot back up their data on iCloud. Also, the old backups that are present in iCloud will be deleted.

Why is the change happening?

Apple is constantly upgrading its operating system so that users can get better security and new features. This decision has been taken due to lack of technical support and security in older iOS versions.

Which Users Will Be Affected?

This will directly affect those iPhone and iPad users who are still using iOS 8 or older versions. iCloud backup will not work in such devices.

Affected Devices:

  • iPhone 4S
  • iPad 2
  • iPad 3rd and 4th generation
  • iPod Touch 5th generation

If you are using the above-mentioned devices and are unable to update the iOS version, then it will not be possible to access iCloud backup after May 17, 2025.

What should be done?

  • Update iOS Version: If your device supports iOS 9 or newer version, then update the software as soon as possible.
  • Take Backup: Instead of iCloud, you can take backup of your data on a computer.
  • Upgrade to a New Device: If your device is very old and update is not possible, then consider buying a new device.

The main objective of this step of Apple is to give priority to new technology and security by removing the old version. This will make iCloud services even more secure and faster.

If you are using iOS 8 or older versions, then back up your device and save it in a safe place by May 17, 2025. Updating iOS in time or buying a new device would be a better option.
